If you’re a UK business, club, or charity, .co.uk almost always beats .com — and not for a subtle reason. It tells a UK visitor you’re a UK business before they’ve read a word of your site.
When .co.uk is the right call
- You serve UK customers, clients, or members specifically
- Trust and locality matter — healthcare, local trades, clubs, community groups
- Your business name is already taken as a .com by someone unrelated
When .com still makes sense
- You expect customers outside the UK, now or soon
- Your brand name IS the domain, and the .com happens to be free
- You’re building something international from day one — software, an app, a global audience
The mistake to avoid
Buying both “just in case” and letting one sit unused isn’t wrong, but don’t buy five variations (.co.uk, .com, .org.uk, .uk, .net) out of indecision. Pick the one your actual audience will type, register that, and redirect the obvious alternate if you’re worried about someone else grabbing it.
What it costs
Registration and renewal at the same price — no surprises. Check availability and pricing.
